Youth Programs

As part of our commitment to our communities, Pioneer Electric offers several Youth Programs that provide informal and formal educational opportunities to young people in southwest Kansas. Our Youth Programs include tours, scholarships and internships.

Youth Tours

Youth Tour Application
Any high school sophomore or junior in the Pioneer Electric service area whose parents or guardians reside in the territory served by Pioneer Electric may apply for the annual Youth Tours. These all-expense-paid educational trips to Washington, D.C. or Steamboat Springs, Colorado are sponsored by Pioneer Electric and the Kansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc., of Topeka.

Washington, D.C. Youth Tour
The "Government In Action" Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. takes place each June. During this week-long tour, students will visit historic sights, attend educational sessions, meet with Kansas elected officials and tour the White House.

Steamboat Springs, CO Leadership Camp
The "Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp" Youth Tour in Steamboat Springs, Colorado takes place in July. At this seminar, the participants will tour Craig Station, attend sessions featuring energy, safety and career opportunities as well as visit beautiful Steamboat Springs.

As part of the selection process, participating youth take a short written exam and attend a personal interview conducted by a panel of judges. The exam covers information furnished by Pioneer Electric.

At Pioneer Electric, we strongly believe in developing opportunities for young people in southwest Kansas and encourage students within our communities to continue their education after high school. In keeping with this philosophy, we have established a Scholarship Program.

Scholarships ranging from $250 to $1000 are available to high school seniors whose parents or guardians reside in Pioneer Electric's service area. The scholarships are used toward tuition fees, books or on-campus room and board at the post-secondary school of the student's choice.

Pioneer Electric offers the $1000 Powerline Technology Scholarship to students who plan to pursue a degree in Powerline Technology. Students who are interested in applying for the scholarship should complete the Pioneer Electric Scholarship form (which you can get by calling us) and indicate your field of study as Powerline Technology.

If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships, please contact Pioneer Electric at (620) 356-1211 or 1-800-794-9302.

Enhanced High School Experience

Pioneer Electric provides career and professional opportunities for high school students through internships, job shadowing and mock interviews.

Communities in Schools

Every Monday afternoon during the school year, a Pioneer Electric employee volunteers his or her time to help with the elementary after-school program. This program identifies children at risk who are in need of positive role models.

SafetyFest

Every year, Pioneer Electric invites all elementary students to participate in a safety fair. Area businesses and organizations are invited to educate students on safety. The SafetyFest reaches over 1000 children annually, helping to educate them on safety measures.
