Danea' Heckman and Logan Brecheisen were among 25 Kansas high school students to witness “Government in Action” first-hand during the 2011 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. Pioneer Electric Cooperative sponsored Heckman and Brecheisen on this trip that took place June 9-16, 2011.

The Kansas participants enjoyed the weeklong tour where they visited with Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran, met youth from other states, and learned about our nation’s history and government. The Kansas delegation also toured the memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, Smithsonian, Ft. McHenry, Holocaust Memorial Museum, Mt. Vernon, Kennedy Center and a cruise on the Potomac River.

Danea’, the daughter of Matt and Heather Heckman of Ulysses, described her trip as “epic” and the most amazing trip she’s ever taken. “Thank you, Pioneer Electric for sponsoring this trip for youth in our area. This youth tour trip allowed me to meet people from other parts of my state and my country. It broadened my perspective and I’m so grateful for this opportunity!”

Logan, the son of Galen and Tracy Brecheisen of Hugoton, is a second generation youth tour delegate. His mother, Tracy, attended the “Government in Action” Youth Tour when she was a sophomore and represented her Missouri high school.

Logan added, “I had a great time on my youth tour trip. I met new friends and got to see Vice President Biden- it was awesome, thank you Pioneer Electric!”

Danea' and Logan said they had the experience of a lifetime working with peers from other states and electric cooperative staff during the Washington stay.

“While in Washington, D.C., I met all kinds of people and visited historical monuments, places of government and other educational sites,” she said. “What I learned while I was on the Youth Tour makes me proud to be an American and to show that America’s young people are involved and care about this country and our communities.”

The Youth Tour brings high school students from across the nation to Washington, D.C. every year. For more information about the “Government in Action” Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, contact Rae Gorman, Pioneer Electric Youth Tour Coordinator, 620-356-1211 or rgorman@pioneerelectric.coop
